After the successful completion of our previous project on warming and finishing large loggia we started warming our balcony in the kitchen. We had to carry out, in general, the same tasks as the loggia ( to install new PVC windows and insulate ) , but with some additions , because the plan is not just warm a balcony and update the finish, but also to combine the kitchen balcony .

Preparing for a balcony glazing and insulation

First of all, it was necessary to remove the old glazing balconies, which was once 20 years ago , and they themselves have made of timber, which were then able to get. Today, the old wooden frame and single-layer glazing is no longer something that did not solve any questions warming , but that also look might just fall apart.

Once the old glazing was shot had to resolve the issue with the wall that separates the balcony into two unequal parts between the different apartments. Such a project at home . But interestingly , the project did not provide for capital dividing wall . And the function of the separation balcony served sheet chipboard , which established itself in due time .

For the construction of the wall decided to use gas silicate blocks as thick as 10 cm For more securely mounted wall , about every third masonry walled up to 12 mm round steel reinforcement, which is one part of bury in a hole in the main wall at home. The upper part of the wall , too, further consolidated the steel corners , because normally lay the mortar between the blocks and the upper balcony slab failed, and the foam did not expect much , though small opening on top .

Leveling the floor on the balcony

Then proceeded to leveling floor balcony , because it has quite a natural bias towards the street. Decided to align with a thick self-leveling floor- filler , because difference in height between the floor of the kitchen and the balcony is quite significant and we are all the same it was necessary to compensate .

Screed thickness of about 3 cm left no particular problems have arisen with filling and tie stood perfectly still . Capacity for a solution – a plastic bowl on 30 – 40 l , punch , cap for proper mixing and the mixture itself has self-leveling floor – that’s all it took .

Now it’s time to order the installation of a new glass balconies . Balcony glazing decided to do quite standard – four-chamber PVC profile with triple glazing (3 glasses ) . But it is worth to mention one important point. The main feature of our balcony glazing is the lack of capital parapet walls . We on the balcony of this role steel pipe with a diameter of 8 cm, firmly in the wall of the house and corrugated galvanized sheet .

There could be options :

The first option better and more reliable , but it implies a loss of 10 cm useful area that we would like to avoid . So we decided to do the same , as well as the glazing of balconies ( option was a viable and with glass on the balcony all right) .

The pipe welded steel bracket (This is done guys from the company , which will do the glazing) , which created the necessary surface for glazing. And as long as our order for glazing carried out , we had time to get warmed balcony .

Warming of the front wall of the balcony

To make the most efficient use of our parapet wall , as much of the pipe hanging over the galvanized sheet , forming a bit of space , and we need to cling to the edge of the pipe ( welded on corner ) , it was decided to create the first layer of insulation as follows.

Please carefully sealed all the cracks and holes in the wall of the parapet . Across the surface of the wall paved plastic wrap and glue on top of it put a layer of mineral wool insulation .

After that pressed insulation laminated sheet of waterproof plywood 2 cm thick , and has become our main support member front wall .

About how we raised the sheet of plywood on the 6th floor the stairs you can write a separate and very emotional story  The fact that such a sheet weighs about 80 kg . and not fit even in the freight elevator , not even looking at the fact that we have him on the street trimmed to size. But after fixing a plywood sheet , bottom corners , top screws into the welded corner , in one fell swoop we have a monumental wall , from which proceeded to dance .

After all the cracks on top of plywood glued sheets of extruded polystyrene foam thickness of 5 cm, which formed a second layer of insulation balconies. After that, pasted layer penofolom did crate of bars 30 × 40 .

On the crate already tightened ordinary plywood thickness of 1 cm thus created an air pocket , which is the third layer of insulation . As a result of a front wall of the balcony was such a multi-layered ” cake “, as can be seen in the photos below . The thickness of the wall was not very high and 20 cm wide sill fit perfectly.

Thermal insulation of the floor balcony

After finishing the front wall of the balcony warm , engaged in sex. Main floor insulation – the same sheets of extruded polystyrene , which is glued on top of penofol . As the sub-floor decided to use small-format sheets GVL . And overall, nearly brought the height of the balcony floor to floor level kitchen .

Stacking of gypsum fiber board is pretty simple:

1. The sheets are cut to size. Seamed edges are cut off at the sheets adjacent to the wall (we used an ordinary hacksaw ) ;

2 . On standing seam edge of the sheet is applied PVA glue  , the second sheet is placed and fastened with screws in increments of 10-15 cm

Insulation of walls and ceiling balcony

During the time while we were doing insulation and floor balcony parapet , our order for glazing done in a few hours and set a new one. And you could start warming the walls and ceiling balcony.

As a heater used all of the same sheets of extruded polystyrene foam. The only difference was in the process of fixing . Before that insulation was attached with glue , then it was fixed to the walls , using special fasteners for insulation – poppet plug (” fungi “, ” umbrella ” as they are called ) .

After the installation of the main insulation on top of it stuck penofol 1 cm thick . All joints and cracks taped metallic tape. And making a crate on the left and the right wall ( the front wall is attached sheet of plywood ) , stoned wall panels of MDF. After that, it’s time to take the union of the balcony to the kitchen.
