The ventilation in the garage basement and pit

When I see in the announcements about the sale of the car the phrase “garage storage”, the condition of such a car causes serious doubts, because the vast majority of garages or not equipped with ventilation at all or ventilation is done incorrectly and does not work. All this leads to the defeat of the car corrosion much more strongly than if it was stored simply under a canopy. This applies to an unheated garage. If the garage is heated, the problem can be safely multiplied by any number – there will be little. And add to this condensation in the form of water in the fuel tank, which is formed at every departure – arrival in the cold season. Especially relevant for diesels.

So how to properly do the ventilation in the garage? Well, first, let’s determine what the task is facing the ventilation system.

The main task of the ventilation system is to remove excess moisture from the garage by means of the maximum possible air exchange with the environment. It is also undesirable for the car a large temperature difference at the exit and arrival in the garage. It is also important to remove technical odors during the repair work. If you have to start a car in the garage during the repair, then not to burn the opportunity of a powerful airing of the garage. And it is also good to make a pipe that dresses on the exhaust pipe and is displayed out.

What is the ventilation system made of? As a rule, it is a ventilation system and a separate exhaust ventilation system in the garage. There are also doors and gates that allow for intensive airing.

The main task of exhaust ventilation is to remove moist air from the room.

An active ventilation system that uses electric fans cannot be permanently turned on and serves only as a quick hood. It can be built simply by inserting a fan into a hole in the wall. Since we have the main task – to protect the car from corrosion by the method of creating a certain microclimate in the garage, the active ventilation system will not be considered particularly.

Let’s consider how to build the correct exhaust ventilation, created without the use of electric fans and working on natural traction in the ventilation pipe.

In order to provide good traction in the exhaust vent pipe, you need to meet several requirements:

1. The hood hole should be located at the highest point of the garage, i.e. under the ceiling (see photo at the beginning of the article).

2. The height of the pipe should be maximum, but not less than 3 meters from the point of entry of cold air into the room through the channel of the ventilation. The higher the better. In our case, the garage has a two-thcut roof and a chimney hoods exits through the attic to the skate roof.

3. The exit of the exhaust vent pipe should be protected from direct rain. To do this, it is equipped with a fungus or can be covered with a slate of the roof as in our case.

4. Wind rose should be taken into account. The exhaust channel should be made so that its direction coincides with the prevailing wind and that the wind does not blow out into it. In our case, the prevailing winds are north-west and south-east, so we will build and the second exhaust vent in the opposite direction.

To be fair, ventilation tests were carried out in high winds that fell into the exhaust pipe. While the difference in the heights of inflow and hood was correctly observed, the traction was still maintained, as in the first photo of the article and decreased slightly only with strong gusts of wind.
