Turbidity Meters what is Turbidity

Turbidity Meters what is Turbidity-An important indicator of the quality of water used for almost any purpose is the presence of mechanical impurities – suspended solids, particles of silt, clay, algae and other microorganisms, and other small particles.

Allowable amount of suspended solids varies widely as possible and their contents. Suspended solids in water disrupt the passage of light through the sample water and the water creates a quantitative characteristic, called turbidity.

Turbidity can be regarded as a characteristic of the relative transparency of the water. Turbidity measurement – is not a direct determination of the amount of particulate matter in liquid, and measurement of the light scattering by the suspended particles.

In simple terms, turbidity – the result of the interaction between light and suspended particles in water. Passing through the liquid is pure light beam remains practically unchanged, though, even in an absolutely pure water molecules cause scattering of light by some, though a very small angle.

As a result, neither the solution turbidity has zero. If the sample contains suspended solids, the result of the interaction of the sample with the transmitted light depends on the size, shape and composition of the particles and the wavelength (color) of the incident light.

Although to date, developed a variety of techniques to determine the contamination in the water, turbidity is still important because the haze – is a simple and irrefutable indicator of changes in water quality. A sudden change in turbidity may indicate an additional source of contamination (biological, organic or inorganic) or signal problems in the water treatment process.

Turbidity increases with rainfall, floods, melting glaciers. Typically, winter turbidity levels in the reservoirs, the lowest, highest during the spring and summer rains. Note that transparency does not only water turbidity, but also its color. As a result of increased turbidity worsens not only the appearance of water, but also bacterial contamination, because turbidity protects the bacteria and microorganisms for water disinfection or any other procedure for disinfection.

Devices for determination of turbidity:
Currently turbidimeter used different light sources, but the most common – incandescent lamp. These bulbs have a wide range, they are simple, inexpensive and reliable. Light from the lamp is characterized quantitatively by color temperature – the temperature, which should be ideal black body to glow with the same color. Color temperature of white heat, and therefore the spectrum of the lamp depends on the applied voltage to the lamp.

Produced HACH turbidimeter for maximum stability, use a combination of optical devices: a detector located at an angle of 90 °, a combination of the light detectors, direct and inverse scattering and mirrors reflecting infrared radiation only. In practical applications, noise and error is a serious problem, because it reduces the accuracy of any instrument. To ensure that the device is working properly and provides the most accurate results, it is important to check the calibration of the instrument.
