How to maintain and use mud pots

Clay pots are an element of decoration which helps to highlight the natural beauty of our plants. Their shapes and sizes are varied, and can “fit” anywhere or corner.

The first thing to do after choosing the pot, is to immerse it in cold water for a whole day. The next day, dry water and left to dry in the air, so will last much more time without any cracks.
If the pots have a whitish color, to remove it and that they look like new, you just have to clean with linseed oil (this oil is available in hardware stores and shops where handicraft items are sold).

If you have to transplant one small pot to another bigger, you don’t have to break it, is simple. You only have to turn the pot, holding the floor with one hand. With the other short roots that protrude from the pot, and then hit the base with the hand, the Earth will come off without difficulty (to facilitate this task, it is best not to water it for one or two days, since the dry land is clear more easy to the walls of the pot).

A base of about 2 cm of gravel should be placed at the bottom of the new pot to help drainage. Enter the plant and filled with Earth. Carefully press the new land and water abundantly.

A trick: if when you add the new land also add some grains of rice or lentils, these will help to regulate the humidity.

Remember: clay pots are ideal for those plants that need an abundant irrigation but retain moisture, since through their pores, Earth perspires better and dries faster.

If the plant needs constant humidity, you should choose a plastic pot.
