Types of radiant heat – electric and water

Spring has finally arrived. But don’t let the warm weather fool you into forgetting about winter problems. If your heating system couldn’t provide you with comfort during the coldest months, nothing will change next year — that is, unless you make a change in advance.

By evaluating your HVAC system, you can easily determine that your frustrations are due to the performance limitations and high operating costs associated with conventional forced air. Indeed, many people have already come to the same conclusion. Perhaps that is why an increasing number of homeowners are opting for radiant heating in one form or another.

Types of radiant heating systems

Today, two main types of radiant heating technologies are widely used, and it is unlikely that they can be more different.

ELECTRIC RADIANT HEATING SYSTEMS

One type of radiant system is based on a network of cables laid between the floor and the black floor. Electricity heats the cables, and the cables, in turn, heat the floor. Electrical systems are ideal for providing extra heat in a small room such as a cold main bathroom, not least because they are easy to install and require relatively low upfront costs. However, heating the whole house with electric radiant heat will be prohibitively expensive, given that such installations rely entirely on electricity, which, of course, is not cheap. For this reason, electric radiant systems can be considered a luxury of comfort, ideal for heating the floor, but not at home.
