National Institute of Social Welfare, Maritime Social Institute, General Treasury and Information Office.

There are also many non-governmental organizations in Spain that operate locally and internationally in the following areas: humanitarian assistance, assistance to marginalized groups, the incapacitated, the seriously ill, the drug addicts, etc.

What is social security

The most detailed information is contained in the Basic Law 8/2015 “On Social Security”, which consists of 6 parts reflecting the basic norms of the social security system, the general rules of social security, protection from unemployment, special regulations on social welfare, protection in connection with termination of activities and a list of non-dependent benefits. The second chapter of the Act enshrines such social regulation as temporary disability, motherhood, paternity, risks during pregnancy, risks during breastfeeding, care for children suffering from cancer or other serious diseases, disability, chronic injuries, retirement, death, widowhood,  protection of the family. All of the above provides for various payments and subsidies in accordance with the Law.

In the case of foreigners, Spain provided residents with the same social security conditions as its citizens, including appropriate payments and social services. This rule is reflected in section 14 of the Law 4/2000 on the regulation of the rights and freedoms of foreign nationals in Spain.

Focusing on legislation in the social sphere, it can be concluded that the state’s attention is largely focused on the social protection of children, pensioners, the disabled and orphans through strong legislative regulation and material support.
