Gardening is a great hobby, coexist with nature is something that undoubtedly can give us many satisfactions. To start in this world there are basic skills that we must learn, and among them are the classification of the plant according to the stem which possess each of them. This will help us to know each plant by name and understand classifications that can be found in some books or magazines of gardening.

As we all know, plants are very different among themselves, and the stem is one of the parts that make them different. We can find several types of stems.

 

How to classify plants according to their stems

Herbaceous stems: these stems take that name because they are the stems of herbs. Herbs at the same time, them can be divided into annual (which grow and die in the space of a year), perennial (lasting several years), and bulbous (grow bulbs), as the Tulip or dahlia. These stems, regardless of their size, have not developed ligneous structures, so they are soft, tender, flexible and juicy.

Woody stems: are the stems of the trees, shrub and climbing. They may be perennial or deciduous (which lose their leaves in fall and winter). Regardless of their size, and unlike the previous one, have developed ligneous structures, making them hard and rigid.

Semi-woody stems: stems most famous of this type are those of the rosales. These stems are a medium between the arable and the Woody consistency.

Fibrous stems: this classification includes all Palms stalks. They are cylindrical stems, without branches and ending in a large tuft of leaves.

Succulent stems: they are inconsistent, spongy stems and which specialize in storing water, like the cactus.
